The Shirt Off Your Back

Most everyone has heard the saying, "they'd give you the shirt off their back". While I've never actually had anyone do that, I did have a friend give me a shelf right off their wall. While living in Massachusetts I was admiring a friends "teacup shelf" that didn't have a teacup one on it. She said, "oh, is that what that is supposed to be" and laughed. I said yes and almost every Southern girl has one on her wall filled with teacups. I asked her where she had gotten it because I have a teacup collection and was in need of one. She had gotten it from J.C. Penney when she was first married about 22 years earlier. A few days later she came to visit me and what did she have with her? The teacup shelf ! I couldn't believe it. She had cleared out all of her nick nacks, took it off her wall and was giving it to me!! I love that teacup shelf and the memories of my dear and very generous friend. She has even added a teacup to my collection. Truly a gift from the heart and one that suited me to a tea.

  1. What a nice friend. Does she want to adopt me as her new friend? I had to laugh that she did not know what the shelf was for:) Your cups are lovely. I collect tea pots but not cups. One collection is enough for me but I am always tempted to buy a cup and saucer. Thank you for sharing your post with me it made me laugh and smile and honestly everyone needs a smile:)

  2. Aren't friends such wonderful gifts? What a treasured memory of your dear, generous friend. Your collection is beautiful. My mother owned a tea cup and saucer collection. When she downsized I received a few of them. They are almost too pretty to use. Hope you are having a good day.

  5. Since I am not from the south, I wouldn't have known it was a teacup shelf either. I would have just put knick knacks on it too. Glad to hear you have such a generous friend. Now that I see it with all your teacups on it, it's obvious that is what it is made for. Duh!!! Thanks for sharing.

I AM from the south...well, NC anyway, and I would not have known that shelf was a teacup shelf....guess that was not a big thing for my family growing up! But I do love yours!
